A little weak. Glad to see Tony isnt dead though, but that could have been predicted without my crystal ball. AJ sucks, Chris dosent. Love when Carm was telling Tony how hot he used to get her by throwing her over his shoulder :sneaky

WOW u people are seriously out of ur fucking minds, all im gonna say is this show is AMAZING, i thought it was great before but they have just taken it to another level i am blown away
between the power struggle and action thats gonna go on in the family, and the similarities to the Godfather with AJ telling tony he is gonna get junior for this and he will be there for him is almost exactly the same as michael corleones transition from regular guy to gangster in the godfather
and with that i will not even bother reading or responding or trying to make any of u idiots see how great this is , instead i will just anxiously await next week

what i mean by "intellectually weak" is that people are unable to see the relevance of what is going on and how much this episode has set the stage. anyone who thinks this episode sucks is UNABLE to see the big picture and the direction the story is heading....which to me is intellectually weak because they dont appreciate how this is being done.

yes ive watched every episode multiple times. my question to you is why do you still watch it if basically the only good season (according to you) was the first 1, and the next 4 sucked? why continue watching? why be loyal to something you only have complaints about? the writers must be doing something right because despite sucking for years, you're tuning in every time and posting your "review" a minute after its done

I agree with you for the most part, after waiting almost 2 years, people want to see action, if the series was like this every episode, do you think it would have as many fans as it does? I wouldnt say this episode sucks, but I certainly wouldnt say it was great. I personally liked the episode because I could relate to that situation to a certain extent , However, just because there are puns thrown everywhere and they are setting the stage, doesnt mean it was good.

Show was excellent.. that mob shit is too predictable.. its big letting the thought of no tony soprano into peoples heads.. the possibility of no tony soprano.. its big having tony see his possibilities in his dreams and him kind of enjoying not being tony soprano.. about to make the call but not making it.. all working the emotional ties weve all made to him. these are the kind of things you do at the end of an era.. mind fucks, what it wouldve been like if it all didnt happen.. what it could be like if we all change our perspective of the show.......... and then u go and make 5 soprano spinoffs next year lol

DAMN, okay well just go with the grey and orange one. im sure the shaving will be kinda traumatic so might as well give it a little thrill to balance things out.
That was huge..Da fuck is Beck talking about.
Seriously, it was fucking huge for Tony to do that. Nevermind the obvious fact he killed family, it was someone he already felt guilty towards for him spending YEARS in prison, losing his family, etc. So on top of all that bullshit now he's gotta kill the guy?? over some stupid hit tony b did?
The predictable thing would've been for a war to go down...the unpredictable would've been tony on the porch w/ a shotgun givin it to tony b himself- I love this show :rubhands

before that point michael corleone had no type of crime experience whatsoever and motivated to protect his father he turned into a ruthless cunning superb mob boss
now im certainly not saying that fucking moron AJ is gonna be anywhere close to what michael was lol but it was a similar situation

I agree 100%...she never had to stir up such emotion. He really should have pushed some of them to do more, some of them are incredibly talented.
Didn't Tony once tell Dr. Malfi that if he was ever losing his mind like his Uncle Junior he'd want his family to euthanize him?
Chase has always forced the audience to keep Tony's mortality on our minds, keeping it a constant question on Tony's mind each season...now that comes to fruition, you are all wondering if Tony will die because really, it wouldnt be THAT shocking for him to kill him off the show...would it? Ambitious...
didnt the Fed agent say "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public." ...I think that correlates directly to how this family is going to act come the next few episodes...people were already wondering what would happen if Tony died before Junior even shot him, now that is coming to fruition as well...and everyone will get to see the greed and evil that lies deep within MANY MANY people...who will do what? everyone's wondering and left hanging
oh well, maybe I am overthinking it, but I think I UNDERthink the Sopranos, so I'll keep watching until I figure that out! lol

"Number three is Khu, the Guardian Angel. . . .
"Number four is Ba, the Heart, often treacherous. . . . Number Five is Ka, the Double. . . . Number Six is Khaibit, the Shadow, memory, your whole past conditioning from this and other lives.

I also thought AJ's revenge attitude was GREAT...didn't see that one coming...I dont think ANYone did because the entire episode he was just burying all his emotions and acting lethargic about the whole thing, even referred to his father as "Anthony Soprano" and not dad. That is precisely their point...this might be what turns him around from being a spoiled brat, he still has time to change lol, he is in college for teh love of god he isnt 65. The point is that it is very well possible (and this is definitely TRUE) that the son of a wealthy gangster family, who has everything handed to him on a silver platter all his life, grew up in a mini-mansion and never worked a day in his life thus far, might just end up lazy and ambivalent about everything especially hard work. That makes perfect sense to me...and seems more plausible than the son being some brainiac that shovels snow for everyone in his neighborhood every winter :shrugger

I cant hate on people disliking last night's episode or whatever, your entitled to your own opinion but to me that was one of the most gut-wrenching, riveting and amazing episodes ive ever seen. Pretty much every tv show thats ever come along has changed over time, nothing ever really stays the same and in order to keep the show fresh i agree with the direction its taking.
As for the content of the episode, i thought it was as good as it gets. Tony's dreams were everything u would expect from the Sopranos writing team : confusing, symbolic and detailed all at the same time. The helicopter light/Dr's light was a great example of him being in his "dream purgatory" and at the same time still holding a connection to the real world. The closing scene where he dialed two numbers and then hung up the phone seemed to incinuate that he desires to come home back to his family (aka the real world) but its not time for that.
This review comes from someone who really watches this show for Tony and Christopher who are in my opinion the most interesting and compelling characters on this show, so watching the real possibility of Tony no longer being on this show was a hard thought to digest. If u didnt like the story u have to give the actors theyre respect; all around the whole cast was just amazing. Carmella's emotions and interactions with Tony in this episode alone will garner her awards considerations when the time comes. Meadow reading poetry to her father, Janice's breakdown when seeing her brother cause while theyre relationship was always strained on one level or another, theyre siblings and thats a line that always holds.
I think AJ's dialogue with his father was the most interesting and captivating of them all. He's barely in college and faced with the prospect of losing his father well before he ever expected to and he's crossing the emotions of anger and confusion at the same time ... im most interested to see what direction his character takes especially after angrily telling his father he was gonna take out his revenge on Junior for what he did to his father.
I also wanna reiterate how impressed i was with Tony's family-wide reaction to him getting shot it was as realistic as i could have expected. Anyone who's ever had a parent in a serious condition in a hospital bed will tell u how real it was. Family members will be sad, reflective, angry, etc. all rolled up together. Not to mention only in an episode like this do they still find a way to get a few laughs out of you between Vito's antics and Tony's crew.
Like Tim said im also anxiously looking forward to next week's episode. I hope somehow Tony survives this and rejoins the show cause even though ill never stop watching its basically impossible to imagine watching show w/out Tony Soprano on it.
One last thing ... Junior is def. now one of the most evil characters in recent television history. :disgusted

gut wrenching and riveting??? I love you james but c'monnn buddy
AJ saying 'oh im gunna put a bullet in his head and then talked about 400hp car"?? that was great dialouge??? oh man
I stand by what i say and u got it in reverse about when AJ was talking about the cars and then what he said about killing Junior ... the car came first because AJ was trying to avoid facing the truth of his father's conditionand more or less avoiding it. When he got up on his feet and was really just looking his father in the face u could see the emotions hit him like a truck.
I found this episode like i said to be gut wrenching and riveting just cause i really watch the show for Tony and Christopher and as a viewer who's watched all the seasons ive grown attached to those two guys especially and seeing a parent in the hospital thru Meadow and AJ's eyes reminded me of a situation i was once in and hit home ... i was extremely impressed with the realism of it cause thats what happens in a scenario like that; u laugh a little, u cry a little, u get angry and it all seems to happen within minutes of eachother.
I still think this show is far and wide the best thing on tv and when it finally comes to a close its gonna leave a hole in tv for drama that cant be filled similar to how a comedy has never truly been able to fill "Seinfeld's" shoes.
I mean u got Mike and the Mad Dog spending 20 minutes on theyre sports radio show talking about last night's episode today ... that tells u by itself how far this show's hand reaches.

beck.. they are showing all points and views of a family. yes the first two seasons were great... im not gonna dispute that. but they are going in alot more depth of being in the mafia. showing they are people just like me and you. they have dealings just the same as me n you.. and to me they are doing a wonderful job showing that it isnt just all the money and glory but its life.. and with life comes death happiness money poverty.. and they are showing it all...if you look at the show.. its just like days of our lives.. its the same concept.. because look we are all sitting here wondering wtf is gonna happen with tony.. we wanna know if tony dies.. whos gonna take over the family.. so it most def resembles days of our lives...to me the last episode was absolutely amazing.. no action but the story line behind it all was spectacular.

Okay, just watched the episode again on On Demand. Few new things I came up with. First off, the whole issue with the elevator being blocked. I dont know what the bear represents, if anything, but the elevator could represent the quick, easy way of getting somewhere. Whether it be down (Hell) or just somewhere (out of the place). Either way, the easy way is blocked. Tony is going to have to work at getting out of this place. On his way down the stairs, and when he is nearly half way to the ground floor he stumbles and falls. There are road blocks confronting him. He has not yet figured out exactly what it is meant for him here. He is taken to the hospital where the doctor informs him of the alzheimers.. Now what is important about this scene is that doctor tells him to "check with your doctors back home. Rest up here for a while". This would imply that in this 'other world' Tony is controlled by doctors, much like what is going on in real life. If this doctor told him to 'rest up here for a while' and to 'check with his doctors back home', he is implying that Tony will not have to stay there permanently. He will in fact be able to get home, but he needs to stay here for a while.
Also, the Bhuddists- They say they have been trying to reach him for months. Now, this could be all the attempts at brining religion to Tony (through Carm and the priest- cant remember his name off hand). Sending two Catholic priests to him would be too obvious, so they instead send Bhuddist monks, who refer to their monastery-- a religious 'community' common to Catholicism as well.
As for my previous comparison between AJ and Tony -- hair and smoking-- doesnt it seem odd that both complain of having upset stomachs? Tony cant eat his sandwich ordered at the bar, AJ got food poisoning? Also, in the way he responds to Meadow with the plate of food scene, AJ appears to be becoming as 'paranoid' or 'self-conscious' as Tony seems to be.
Also, all of the people in the people Tony confronts either make mention that where he is 'supposed to go' is booked or that he is only staying for a short while. The girl at the conference cant let him in even though Tony says "but Im on the list"-- possibly refering to his belief he is supposed to die. The hotel clerk says the place is booked with the conventions. Tony says "I was staying here last night as a guest".. Which is exactly what he is- a guest. hes not supposed to stay in this place for very long. The other hotel clerk says he has the single room for one night. Again, making reference to a short period of time. All in all, the people Tony comes up against remind him hes not supposed to stay here for long. This can be taken two ways-- hes not supposed to die, just to think over what hes been missing in life/supposed to change/be doing in life. Or that he is supposed to stay long enough to realize what is more important to him- his powerful side, backed by the mafia, or his family- which leaves him as powerless, 'like everyone else'.

David Chase is the man nuff said...I hate when people expect the shoot em up bang bang style where somebody has to get whacked every god dam single episode come on people smarten up...what he did yesterday was incredible...He is giving other charatchers on the show time to shine but it will always come back to Tony...
Yea it was boring for parts of the show but that is Chase putting his spin on things..and I cant take Anthony serious with that hair cut and when he said he will put a bullet in Juniors head...and when Paulie called him Van Helsing I almost pissed my pants:LOL :LOL

David Chase is the man nuff said...I hate when people expect the shoot em up bang bang style where somebody has to get whacked every god dam single episode come on people smarten up...what he did yesterday was incredible...He is giving other charatchers on the show time to shine but it will always come back to Tony...
Yea it was boring for parts of the show but that is Chase putting his spin on things..and I cant take Anthony serious with that hair cut and when he said he will put a bullet in Juniors head...and when Paulie called him Van Helsing I almost pissed my pants
There will be a power struggle within the family and what Chase is getting at is this life all comes to a end...Either in Jail/death ..

Thanks Hater, and Tim ill be in Miami this coming Sunday but u better believe i will have a spot and a seat set up for the episode i dont care if every dj alive and dead are all playing at some club im watching that show if i gotta kill somebody to make it happen.
Like i said earlier, i heard at least three different sports radio shows spend upwards of 15 minutes each talking about the show today, i cant believe how everyone is watching it. To be honest i found it fascinating to see Carm, Meadow and AJ all speak to Tony from theyre hearts and not leave much out. Ill say it again, i found AJ's the most interesting ... Tony's only son, possibly reaching a growing point, the responsibilty a son feels for avenging an action like this taken on his father; i got a hard time believing the anger and emotions he's dealing with are just gonna subside. Keep in mind the previews for the show got AJ bugging out over something, grabbing a door and running out of a room and the opening episode showed how AJ is beginning to become a man, so all these things could very well go hand in hand.

THATS BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE ARE STUPID
For years, most of "Sopranos" fandom has been divided into two intersecting sets: those who watch for the whacking and crude humor, and those who watch for the psychiatry and art-house storytelling. By putting the shooting right next to Tony's afterlife business trip, Chase is pushing his chips to the center of the table and telling the audience they had better go all in -- murder and therapy, flatulence jokes and metaphysics -- if they intend to stay at the table for this final season.
I HAD SOME DUMB DITZY AIRHEAD BITCH AT MY JOB TODAY TELL ME SHE THOUGHT IT WAS BORING , WITH THE DUMBEST FUCKIN LOOK ON HER FACE LIKE HAR HAR HAR IM A MORON, SHE SAID IT WAS BORING BUT REMEMBER SHES A DUMB DITZY AIRHEAD BITCH SO I TAKE WHAT SHE SAYS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT

Same here dude.... but I guess we are all intellectually incapable of understanding the meanings. It's the Godfather apparently, now. If Edie Falco crying for an hour did it for me, I'd probably have a rainbow bumper sticker on my car.

Gay shit? The last few seasons of the Sopranos has been about LIFE--the mob setting is just a BACKGROUND--get it?
I've been a huge fan of the Sopranos and I thought every season was beneficial to the story line--even when there was a lack of killing, sex with strippers, and cursing. The ups and downs of the show is what makes it "real". It shows that you are vulnerable to every bad thing about life, even if you ARE a mobster. Not everything is rosey and not every bad thing that happens to you in your life as a mobster revolves around the mob. You are succeptible to mental illness, physical illnessl...you can be gay, you can be straight and kinky, you can be lonely, and you can have all of the power in the world and STILL feel powerless.
It's GREAT IMO and people who knock the show for trying to show a side that hasn't been shown before are just shallow and only looking for the top layer.

I watched it a second time last night too ... just as good a second time around.
By the way, i caught something in episode 2 i told Benny, lets see if anyone agrees with this :
When Tony is waiting for the elevator and the monks approach him they accuse him of something he didnt do ... mistaking him for someone else. Then they slap him, he falls and then run off. Tony gets up and shouts "he hit me" and then "dont let him get away".
Does anything think the old nutty monks (represented Junior) accusing Tony of actually being Kevin (Junior called Tony - Malenga, referring to Pussy Malenga) and cheating them out of heating (the money Junior was owed by Malenga) and then hitting him (Junior shooting Tony) and then running off (Junior running upstairs following the shooting) make that relation ?
I think so cause if u think of what Tony says "He hit me" (he shot me) and "Dont let him get away" (he wants to avenge this shooting) then maybe this is all heading to Tony eventually coming back and FINALLY cutting this old bitch out of the family and it makes sense cause when Tony's guys were discussing how to handle Junior, Paulie ends the discussion by telling the guys "This is Tony's Call" :)

and Bek will be slightly drunk with a cigarette dangling from the side of his mouth and a whopper jr in his hand, yelling at his TV each and every sunday about a basement, bensonhurst, chris paciello, and "IM SMAAAAAART, I CAN RUN THINGSSS".....while his patient, future wife swigs from the bottle of Manneschivitz to cope with it all....in other words, hes gonna go looney like Uncle Junior
Tony checks into the Hotel California

by Alan Sepinwall
WARNING: This column contains major plot spoilers for last night's "Sopranos" episode. If you're waiting until later in the week to watch, read on at extreme peril.
IT'S NOT a dream. It's Purgatory.
When I had my annual summit with "Sopranos" creator David Chase a few weeks ago, I complimented him on having the onions to put a major dream sequence like this so early in the season, considering how many fans complain about the dreams.
"I, frankly, would not call those (episode two scenes) dreams," he said, which sent me scurrying back to watch my DVD over and over again, until (with some help from my wife) I got it.
Here Tony's stuck in Orange County, quite possibly the most personality-free corner of the world, with no way to leave (aka Purgatory). On one end of town is a shining beacon (Heaven), on the other, a raging forest fire (Hell). Over and over, he stops to assess the worth of his own life, asking, "Who am I? Where am I going?"
Then he steals the identity (sin) of Kevin Finnerty -- a heating salesman who lives in one of the hottest states of the union (Arizona) -- checks into another hotel, and falls down a red staircase, at which point he learns he has Alzheimer's (eternal damnation). And while Carmela's busy in the real world telling him he's not going to Hell, Tony's in Purgatory debating whether to tell his wife this is exactly the fate he has in store.
It may be hair-splitting to call this something other than a dream, but Tony's misadventures in Costa Mesa were much more linear and coherent than his regular dreams have ever been. There were important details scribbled in the margins (the bartender joking, "Around here, it's dead," or the "Are sin, disease and death real?" commercial on the TV), but there was an actual story here instead of Tony bouncing from one surreal tableau to another.
Still, Chase followed last week's watercooler cliffhanger with an 11-minute opening sequence set in a world that's not our own, with a Tony who wasn't quite right (it's startling to hear James Gandolfini's natural speaking voice), and only one split-second nod to the shooting (the brief flash of the doctor shining a light in Tony's eye mixed in with the chopper spotlight).
So will Tony ever get to check out of this hotel, and, if so, where will he end up? Again, I can't say, but if this season is going to be about a moral accounting for all of Tony's sins, then there's no better place to start.
Back in the physical world, give Edie Falco the Emmy right now. Just give it to her. Seriously. Do not pass Go, do not collect other nominations, just ship the statuette to her apartment today. There is no way any other actress on television is going to have two better scenes this year than Carmela's hallway breakdown and her monologue to Tony, scored perfectly to Tom Petty's "American Girl."
And is there an Emmy category for Best Silent Hug? Because Michael Imperioli was pretty great when he put his arm around Carmela in the hallway. I know scenes where characters sob or give long speeches are stock award-show bait, but these performances went so far past showing off that I actually had to look away a few times out of a feeling I was spying on a private moment between real people.
Some other random notes:
The song played at the end was Moby's "When It's Cold I'd Like To Die," with vocals by Mimi Goese.
The voice of Purgatory Tony's wife wasn't played by Annabella Sciorra, or any other actress who's been on the show before; she's just a generic non-Carmela female voice.
Boy, Janice's gift for making every moment of every day be all about her survives even her brother's shooting, huh? She shows up at the hospital, pretending she's there to help comfort Carmela, then immediately spazzes out so she's the center of attention. If I didn't know Janice so well from the last four seasons, I might have found her freak-out genuine, but this is Livia Soprano's daughter, people. And speaking of which...
Did you catch AJ throwing Livia's "Poor you!" at Meadow during their hybrid car argument? That's at least three other characters who've now used the old bat's pet insult (Tony and Gloria were the others), and it shows just how rotten and contagious the Soprano genes are.
Meanwhile, you have AJ trying to have his Michael Corleone moment with his plan to murder Junior, but the kid's still too dumb and weak to even pass for Fredo. Loved that he chose to waste all the good will from Carmela by telling her he flunked out of school. (If those other two scenes don't get Falco a drama actress Emmy, maybe she can win the comedy award for her delivery of "With your father in a coma!"
The overall mood was grim, but Vito had the line of the night, if not the season, when he speculated about Eugene's suicide, "Maybe he was a homo, felt there was no one he could talk to about it. That happens, too." Oh, Vito, project much?
In the days after the premiere, many people floated the theory that it was really the finale and the rest of the series would be flashbacks leading up to Tony's shooting. Obviously, that's not the way things are going, and it wouldn't have worked, since not enough of interest had happened to the characters since we saw them last. Yes, Janice and Bacala have spawned, and AJ's hair is longer, but it's not like we came back from hiatus with Silvio missing and Chris wearing an eyepatch. The premiere established that Tony's life had been profitable but uneventful since his jog through the woods.
Now, is Agent Harris really that in love with Satriale's veal parm, or he is baiting a hook to turn Christopher into a cooperator? Nothing on this show is a coincidence, and a few scenes after Harris mentioned Matush, the terrorist-supporting drug dealer, we saw a couple of Middle Eastern men chatting up Chrissie at the Bing.
