I'd say Guanacaste area is the best beach area. As far as safe?...I've heard a lot of good and bad stories. But it's for sure a great destination to visit! My friend bought a beautiful house there last yr and goes often.

Hey Mia,

I was heading out to C.R. last year and asked a friend who owns the best nightclub (vertigo) in San Jose for a writeup.... ended up canceling, but you can get alot of good info from it.... :

Hey Nick,

Well, not sure what you would like to do in CR. The problem with San Jose is it's in the center of the country and away from all the beaches.

Since you're here for a short time, the way to get around is by flying. Over here, Sesna planes are like taxis. It the only way I go to the beach (20 minute flight vs a 3 1/2 hour drive).

Here's a link for a reliable plane contact: www.natureair.com

For nearby beaches, I can recommend Manuel Antonio(Quepos) because of it's beauty and awesome tours. If you're more into the busy hustle and bustle beach town with a small bar scene, then Tamarindo is the way to go. There are tours here as well. Manuel Antonio is more to my liking since I dig sunset cruises with the open bar, water rafting, etc. It's all up to you.

In Manuel Antonio, I usually stay at www.sicomono.com Good location. If you're on a tight budget, then go with www.costaverde.com. It's down the hill and closer to the beach, and the rooms are quite decent. All you need here is one night and two full days here.

Another place I highly recommend in CR is Volcano Arenal. Here's a so-so link that gives you a peak:

http://www.arenal.net/photo-gallery.htm

It's an active volcano which smokes during the day and bleeds lava a night. At the base of the volcano are all kinds of resorts. The big plus at this place are the Tabacon Hot Springs. Sometimes I drive 3 1/2 hours just to chill out here. It's too beautiful. The city, volcano, everything. The last time I was there, the volcano erupted big time in the middle of the night. I thought it was an earthquake until I looked out my window and saw massive lava shooting from the peak. Crazee. I've stayed at: www.arenallodge.com (cabin setting w/great view of volcano) or www.tabacon.com

Anyway, enough of sounding like a tour guide.

CC Romero is in the middle of your week here so that makes it kind of tough. The small Vertigo lounge is open on Thursday night if you decide to spend your week away from the city.

Otherwise, if you decide you want to see Vertigo, I would fly to the beach for two days, return to San Jose (you have to return to San Jose anyway). Do Vertigo, then fly or drive to Arenal for the remainder of your stay. Or do two beaches.

If you stay in the city and your friends are all guys, San Jose can be good. San Jose is a guys town, no doubt, due to it's vibe and bars (except for Vertigo of course).

For stay in San Jose, I recommend the Marriott Courtyard. It's nearby some cool restaurants and in a good location. It's also reasonably priced. It's small but good for just a place to stay. If there's girls in your group that like pool time and shopping, I would go with the Intercontinental. It's across from a nice mall and has a nice pool. http://www.iccostarica.gruporeal.com/

Nick, if you'd like I can save you about $40-50 if you prefer the Intercontinental. I have a corporate account there since I put many of my artists there. Just let me know about a week ahead of time.

If you need anything other info, feel free to let me know.

Cheers,
Elisa

I've had alot of friends goto costa rica over the last few years and they've all had nothing but great things to say. It's relatively cheap, and the beaches, rainforest and coral reefs are all amazing for whatever type of activity your looking for.

yeah these rentals seem really reasonably priced.. im just curious how safe it is since some are literally shacks on the beach..

you will love it! I stayed in Arenal at one of the resorts there, you wake up and look right out onto the volcano. There are great hot springs that you can slide down like one of thoes lazy rivers at great adventure. Limon has amazing beaches, we rented a "hut" there and it had indoor plumbing ect. Food was included in the package. Just so you know, TONS of eurpean women come to costa rica to sleep with the rasta surfer guys, it's a booming industry. I also have family friends who live in CR if you have questions about specific areas safety I could ask them. My only other suggestion is to get someone to drive you, it's really difficult to drive to some of the places you may want to go.
