Based on a breakdown of Apple's last financial statements put up against their declared iphone sales, a NY Times columnist calculated (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/the-831-iphone/) that Apple makes $18 per month ($432 over a 2 year contract) for each iPhone sold. Add the current $399 pricetag (put aside for a moment the initial 1 million units which sold for more) = $831, minus the $245.83 manufacturing cost that was calculated back in January (http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/340/C11406/) by MobileMag, that's $585.17 in Apple's pocket for each iphone sale right now, while it costs the consumer $399 + the cost of the phone bill for 2 years which everyone pays anyway.
