View Full Version : Savage on Autism
Anybody else catch this? Jesus christ what an ass. If you want to say autism is overdiagnosed, or mistreated, fine. But don't insult people saying autistic kids are brats. What is it with conservative radio that requires you to be an asshole blowhard?
Savage on autism: "A fraud, a racket. ... In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out"
Summary: On his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage claimed that autism is
"[a] fraud, a racket. ... I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' "

Talk like his is what drives people away from listening to his statements in their entirety. That's my point.
I have a feeling he could make a relevant point, but speaking so offensively deters anyone from hearing wtf you have to say. It's lack of tact and complete sensitivity.

he did .. it was out of context .. he railing against pharmaceuticals, corrupt doctors, ..his brother died and he was mentally retarded .. soi this hits a nerve with him ..if you go to his site you can listen to every one of these points
1. Savage says the real cases of autism need our sympathy and support. Listen
2. Savage says his brother was severely disabled and that misdiagnosis hurts the child. Listen
3. Savage says that the genuinely autistic need as much love and attention as we can give them. Listen
4. Savage talks about his disabled brother who died in a hospital. Listen
5. Savage speaks with Wendy Fournier, President of the National Autism Association. Listen
6. Savage interviews psychiatrist Dr. Peter Breggin. Dr. Breggin says that though there are real cases of autism, those involved in the broadening of its diagnosis are in the pay of pharmaceutical companies. Breggin says Savage is correct that autism is over diagnosed. Listen
7. Savage speaks with Dr. Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University who has worked extensively with autistic children. He says that the definition of autism has been expanded too far. Listen
8. Caller Kyle is a school psychologist who works with autistic kids and agrees with Savage on the over diagnosis of autism and how it only hurts the kids who truly have the condition. Listen
9. Caller Susan says her child was labeled autistic by school officials and that she was pressured to sign off on the diagnosis. Listen
10. Caller Tikvah is a therapist in New York City who works with children who says that kids are frequently labeled with autism even though they have other conditions because the agencies are provided with more funds for that diagnosis. Listen
11. Savage says his comments about autism were directed at those who are falsely diagnosed and that he knows what it's like to have a child suffer in front of his eyes. Listen
12. Savage reads from his book Healing Children Naturally where he cautions against the drugging of children. Listen
13. Savage mentions that UK doctors do not screen for autism because screening tools have not been fully validated. Listen
14. Savage says real autism is devastating, but that it's difficult to diagnose, such that the do not screen for it in the UK. Savage says that over diagnosis occurs because of the "autistic spectrum" and this is insulting to the truly ill. Listen
15. Caller Victoria has an autistic child and says it is too easy to get a child diagnosed as autistic. Savage says resources for autism must be reserved for children like hers. Listen
16. Savage says he has devoted his life to helping children and gives the context for his remarks. Listen
17. Savage criticizes doctors for recommending cholesterol drugs on children as young as two. Listen
18. Savage says that though people are making money from false diagnosis, real cases of autism deserve our sympathy and out support. Listen
19. Savage says many experts say that many children are falsely diagnosed. Listen
20. Savage says that real autism is tragic, and that a false diagnosis is a crime against the child.

no, not every person that is outspoken is TACTLESS. I am very outspoken, very opinionated, and I rarely look back on things I've said and feel crass nor do I offend people in my daily life. I know my limits and how to say things delicately.
You ruin the effectiveness of your point if you say it in the most insulting, inflammatory way. it's like my problem with coulter, nobody will listen b/c she's too busy saying things overly-offensively.
maher can be offensive, but most times he's not looking for the shock value of the statement.
taking something out of context is not the same as saying it in a purposely hurtful way.
99% are just brats that haven't been told to shut up? how else would one take that?

An independent-minded individualist, Michael Savage fits no stereotype. He attacks big government and liberal media bias, but champions the environment and animal rights.
Trained as a scientist, he holds Master’s degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in Epidemiology and Nutritional Science. He spent decades searching and saving tropical rainforests.
Savage is also the author of 18 books including four New York Times Best Sellers: "The Political Zoo", "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder", “The Savage Nation” and “The Enemy Within.”

im pretty tactless sometimes, however i gotta say somehting
i agree somewhat with him in some senses. maybe not his presentation of it, but statistically speaking everyone in NJ's children has fucking autism?!? everyone has ADHD, or ADD? the WHOLE country is sick? come on, there is autism and then theirs aspergers which is a high functioning autism, one of the dudes we work with has this and honestly he can hold a job, conversation, train martial arts, and do insane work, BUT when shit hits the fan and he can live up to his word, then all of a sudden its his autism.. i think alot of it is bullshit. if you have full on autism thats 1 thing, but to have a slight autism like i have slight dyslexia or slight add, is really like my grandfather said
a good swift kick in the ass. Its one thing to have a problem its another thing to use that problem as an excuse.

agreed completely, but to say 99% percent of cases are bullshit when kids honestly are suffering is complete bull.
sweeping legit illnesses under the rug is just as bad as treating every behavioral problem as some "sickness" and prescribing meds for it. both are ineffectual and harmful.

i dont understand how soft this country is where a few words by a doctor on a talk show host about people with misdiagnoses is sog goddamned offensive?
if you really want to learn something autism instead of what mediamatters says why dont you listen to these two clips...

you can't just take comments without taking the context though. My nephew is autistic and is far from a spoiled brat, kid is 13 still can't have a conversation with you. However the fact is the government(FDA....etc), Big Pharma etc.....have been marketing and manipulating American's health & laws for capitalistic purposes. Is it any surprise that in the early 90's when the criteria for ADD/ADHD got changed that Prozac & Xanax prescriptions went from like 3-4 Million to like 90 million overnight and nowadays Zoloft outsells Tide, it's not a coincidence.

do you not have to sometimes smack someone on the head to wake them up??? are there people that wouldnt understand what you are tryign to say because they are so blindsided by the situation because of what the docs have been feeding them for years??? that the only way to get your point accross is by making a outlandish comment to get your attention?

I really cant believe you think he did more harm than good. i find it really funny, actually sad that people are more worried about being offensive than the actual health of the person. whats offensive is psychologists working for schools falsely diagnosing kids with autism to get more money for the school... but WHEN HAS ANYONE EVER BEEN OFFENDED BY THAT?! morons goddamnit this country works assbackwards.. damn as a kid i knew stick and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me... i guess were too soft as a country for that line nowadays

i know alex and benny are fans..did you guys hear the doctor who would go out with reps to other doctors after doing a prescription data mining ?? fuckin disgrace.. shit i wish i had time i gotta run .. ill get into detail later..
What you think that's something new? I work for a pharmaceudical marketing co and we have teams and teams of phd medical writers doing that, you have no idea the amount of $$$$ being pumped into data mining patient & prescription information and marketing patient education. You think it's a coincidence that patients come into a doctor asking for Viagara or Zoloft instead of generic brand X, or that doctors pump out whatever free samples they get $$$$$ & the EMO(see HMO) nonsense hitting schools next is even more ridiculous.
agreed on both takes 100%
tho the problem is drawing the fine line as to whats real and whats abuse on the docs part i guess.
right, and abuse on the parents' part b/c they'd rather diagnose and medicate their child's problem away than handle it. parents get lazy, want a pill to fix their probs w/ their kid, and the dr. is more often than not a little too eager to oblige.
i can't think of anything worse to do to a kid who clearly needs special attention and extra help than medicating him thinking that solves the problem. now you just have a doped up kid w/ a problem, instead of just the problem.:disgusted
People who abuse diagnoses make it worse for those who actually do suffer. People take the problems less seriously b/c everyone and their mother has a "condition" nowadays.
he said 99% of the kids misdiagnosed just need a kick in the ass.. i remember exactly what he said, I was driving across 125th st in harlem coming home from work when he said it and I knew people were gonna have a hissy fit... the guys done more for children than those losers at mediamatter who only know to criticize have or will ever do.
then he shouldn't do his hard work such a disservice by sounding like an arrogant prick. you do not convey understanding and empathy for someone's plight by blurting 99% of the afflicted are whiny bitches that need an ass kicking.
how would it look if i did all this work w/ the homeless, let's say, volunteer, charity work, etc.for their cause, and then went on record ranting about how the homeless are lazy, junkie, pieces of shit that really just need an ass kicking & a job. completely contradictory. it's like schizo lol
Having tact and consideration when you speak is not being "soft" or "PC". It's called being mature. Since when did it become admirable to talk out your ass in this country unchecked? It's more honest to be a blowhard than put some thought into your words?
Only people who don't know how to be tactful think that.
I'd never say anything so offensive just to get a point across. U can get a point across without being so tactless and insensitive to peoples' situations.
Some people can't multitask. Trying to get their point across is enough, you can't honestly expect them to focus on HOW they get it across SIMULTANEOUSLY can you? Way too much work.
I could go shoot up a school, that would get the issue of gun control and school safety on the table REAL FAST, but is it a good fucking idea? no. Sometimes the method does more harm than good, and just b/c it got people talking, doesn't mean he couldn't have gotten people talking otherwise.
People who operate like this, raising hell, causing controversy to call attention to their issues and views, remind me of unruly kids who don't know any other way to express themselves & get what they want aside from temper tantrums and acting like terrors.
Pay attention to them at any cost, they don't care how they get your attention, as long as they do. Pretty fucking sad IMO. I always thought you were supposed to grow beyond that & as an adult have more tools than raising a stink.

He totally could've made his point that he thinks many of the cases are bunk, and that the kids just need some "tough love" instead. People might not have agreed, but there'd be nothing disrespectful in that.
If anything that comment just made parents of autistic kids defensive and angry. How likely are they going to be to consider his point if they're too busy being pissed and offended by his approach?

One line can easily be taken out of context and is totally diff than that rant that Shae posted. I'm far from a diehard, but sometimes people just can't comprehend(ex. I'm not ignorant, it's just irrelevant to me. If you can tell me he did indeed say that, I don't care the context, it's an incredibly poor choice of words for a point that IS WORTH MAKING.

when you write a book on childrens nutrition ..and what aminos and nutrients help kids as oppossed to pharma companies drugging 8 year old with speed .. then you'll have credibitilty to challenge him
This makes me wonder, if it's ok to say offensive things about groups of people we tend to protect (kids) in order to get an important point across, I wonder how some of you would tolerate someone speaking about veterans, and their troubles, the way this guy talked about autistic kids.
If somebody made a case that troops are suffering from such levels of PTSD that they're being medicated during active duty, coming home to inadequate care, and too proud to seek it, but threw in remarks about how "most of these guys are just faking it b/c they're cowards& don't wanna go back. they whine about lack of care and expect red carpet treatment, buncha morons, bla bla bla"
and went on saying inflammatory things about them, and their situation, would it still be ok? given the context, the person is just trying to draw attention to the crisis facing our troops today, their method would be alright?
I don't think I could get away w/ posting language like that towards veterans here for ONE SECOND. Nobody would care the context, or about my intention, I'd get raked over the coals for calling the troops names, implying they're whiny, weak, cowardly, you name it.

I assumed they must've been successful but your comment about no tv time threw me off. why would anyone complain in hindsight about tv coverage when your books are raving sucesseses?
why would you feel the need to express yourself this way on radio as if people weren't BUYING your books, reading your points, and responding already? makes no sense. he didn't need more attention to the topic, sounds like he's got quite the platform.
and i knew comfortably numb wasn't his book b/c I've read mike's posts on it before. i wasn't assuming it was his

so then WHY the whining about lack of tv coverage for his book! clearly it made no difference in its success then, so what's the problem?
media bias reporting on only the negative? nobody reported on it, he said it ON RADIO, he reported it.
he's got access to voice his views, he's sold his books, and you're saying it's media bias b/c it didn't get enough TV airtime?
christ jamez.
As alex pointed out its not his book lol .. comfortably numb is non politcal ..it about pharma companies drugging our youth , .. savage recomends it .
Savage allways hit the best seller list he doesnt need tv lol .. he got his own national radio program ..haha
Because his audience knows him ..something you libs dont understand is the talk radio audience .. lol thats why lib talk show hosts cant pull more than a 1 share ..
how did you just turn your completely unprovable statement into a symptom of my liberal stupidity lol
there is no way you can state that you know all of his listeners were not offended by that, and that it's only people unfamiliar w/ his program that are.
no way you can back that up with any kind of proof, other than, it's your guess "b/c his audience knows him".
that's got nothing to do w/ me jamez, you're passing off opinion as fact, and it's not.

NO SHIT, which brings me to my point, why the loud, harsh, offensive rhetoric on the program if he's got a well established following and booming book sales? you all made it sound like nobody was listening and he beat the drum w/ his brash talk to get the topic on the table. how int he world is he not being heard if his books are consistent bestsellers?
why resort to methods like this if you have no trouble getting your material heard?

SAVAGE: Now, I know many of you are on vacation time. I understand that as well. Most of the country is in this kind of dozy, lazy, sleepy business as usual. I don't blame you. I don't blame you for wanting to pretend America is what it was when your father was in this country. No, it's not your father's America. It is not your father's America at all. The radical Islamists are amongst us. They are in cahoots with the radical leftists. They are vigilant and they work 24/7. The radical left, the homosexual mafia, and the Islamists are all working together to undermine talk radio to begin with.
Now, you have to ask yourself, "Why would the homosexual mafia, in the form of Media Matters, and the Islamists agree that conservative talk radio should be picked off and taken off the air?" You have to answer that question yourself because a) you know that liberalism is a mental disorder. We know that what Islamists will do should they win anywhere. They'll kill homosexuals. They'll take away all of the freedoms of women. They'll impose Shariah law, which means no law whatsoever; it's gangsterism.

Apparently 1500 of his Mississippi listeners don't "know him very well", & found the remarks offensive, and expressed it.
Don't make baseless claims jamez. You're in no position to know how the man's entire audience felt about his statements & thinking NOBODY got offended other than those that are reading news bits and watching clips is just stupid.
The SuperTalk network of Mississippi announced that it would discontinue airing Savage on seven stations. "We're a conservative network," said Steve Davenport, chief executive of Telesouth Communications, SuperTalk's parent company. "I just didn't see why a person with so much hatred had a place in our network."
Davenport's company received more than 1,500 e-mails expressing outrage from Mississippi listeners over Savage's comments.
During a press conference in Manhattan on Friday, John Gillmore and Evelyn Ain of Autism United and State Sen. Craig Johnson (D–Port Washington) applauded the "necessary" steps taken by the advertisers and radio stations.

They started it. LOL
I'd be curious to know...what do u think about what he said JK? Since seemingly everyone else who replied is a die-hard fan (besides Shae and I) and he can do no wrong in their eyes...
I think that mediamatters chopped up and served a portion of what he said and served it to the media on a silver platter for them to eat up in a biased manner... the guy is a credible authority on nutrition and health and he spoke more on the issue than what this sentence gives.
When in doubt, flip the script and picture how much you would argue the point if Savage was someone you did listen to... let's say Bill Maher said something like this.. would it offend you? no because you get the big picture about what he's saying. Media Matters knew most people wouldn't and this serves their agenda. Let's not trust any "leaning" media outfit at face value. Media Matters openly admits that it's their duty to "counter" conservative media, the way Fox counters liberal media. So without clips and blurbs like this they can't keep their doors open. Take it with a grain of salt and try and understand the big picture.. if we're gonna get offended by words we'll be chasing our tails and chasing worthless news stories all day long.

I'm still curious to see who'd tolerate this type of method in putting the spotlight on veterans' issues. It seems to me, by what I'm reading, it's ok to inflame, and use names like brat, moron, etc., when describing a group, as long as your OVERALL motivation is to help their cause?
The ends justifies the means? So anybody can say stuff like that about our military and get away unscathed, b/c people would look to the "context" and say they're trying to draw attention and help?
i said fans.. not listeners..lol
Because people frequently listen to shows hosted by those they aren't particularly fond of.
That was a pathetic reach jamez. Fans, listeners, no matter. You can't say who was, or was not, offended.
let's remember here, my argument is that I don't like tactics like that when it comes to things people can't help or are suffering from. maher railing on religion is different. yes, he says crass things, but religion is a CHOICE people make, something they practice. he's no saint, but he tends to point out practices and choices that are stupid to him, not innate things about people that can't be helped.
criticizing kids for an illness they didn't choose to have, a handicap essentially, is on another level for me. no shit the media pounces on certain sensational items either liberal or conservative, for entertainment value. I'm pretty clear on that by now, but IMO there are certain issues that need to be handled more delicately than others. Everyone has a different idea of boundaries and I think this is really pushing it.
It has nothing to do w/ the man's credentials, the success of his books, show, or whether or not I agree with his basic views.

U do have some good points Mr. Kenneday it's hard to disagree with u - but I do still believe he could have gotten his point across without blatantly offending ppl about such a sensitive issue.
Def can't argue about this anymore tho esp not today I am on 3hrs of sleep and dyinggg lol

i know and i agreed moore brought so much attention that others went to cuba and inestigate in the regular hospitals not what moore showed us.. so in reality we all got educated by someone challenging moore ..
I also belkieve maher has aright to what he says ..especially since he on HBO and has no sponser to offend.. if people were really outraged theyd cancel

:agree thats what makes talk radio and the internet so great...
since its a thread on Savage- from the Savage Manifesto
J. Regarding the media; one, eliminate all foreign ownership of any American media entity. Two, break up overly large conglomerates, like News Corporation.
