On Wednesday, the Tax Policy Center released a report finding a $2.8 trillion gap between Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) public economic proposals and his advisers’ private assurances. McCain adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin responded yesterday to the report, saying that McCain’s public statements are not necessarily “official” policy. Slate reports:
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain’s chief economic adviser, says the numbers he provided to the TPC aren’t secret—they’re the same ones he provides to anyone who asks. He also disputes the way the study takes suggestions McCain has made on the stump out of context. “This is parsing words out of campaign appearances to an unreasonable degree,” Holtz-Eakin said. “He has certainly I’m sure said things in town halls” that don’t jibe perfectly with his written plan. But that doesn’t mean it’s official.

He is the reason for higher gas prices? thats not the least bit misleading? lol......talk about intellectual dishonesty....... and he would rather lose a war? he cares more about his political ambitions than his familys safety? his countrys safety? how about he think his way IS the way to be safer, not intentially losing to win some office..... that challenges his patriotism in the same pathetic ways the republicans always do.... which is totally fine, he just hung up his "above the right's dirty tricks" and has become a tool. Im cool with it....makes my day in fact.
He is like brittney? thats the best they can do.... lmao...... all nonesense and no issues...... pathetic, im almost thinking you are helping them strategize.

Would all of this overwrought press hysteria be rendered even sillier were it to turn out that Sen. McCain was in actuality quoting Sen. Obama? Methinks that it would.
A February 24, 2005, Washington Post article begins:
There's nothing exotic or complicated about how phenoms are made in Washington, and, more to the point, how they are broken.
"Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame," says Barack Obama. "I've already had an hour and a half. I mean, I'm so overexposed, I'm making Paris Hilton look like a recluse."
That is pretty much the who and the why of Sen. McCain's explanation of his ad, is it not? It turns out he wasn't mocking Sen. Obama so much as channeling him. Or making a mini-documentary out of the Post's article.
Either way, it is just another example of the elite media not liking a Leftist's own words being used against him in the court of public opinion.
Update: Time magazine had the quote as well. From their Verbatim section:
