I dont smoke but i do chew Red Man or have the occsional skoal tin .. I know the dangers, I know how bad dry snuff is, thats why i chew or dip moist tobacco I dont need the government looking out for me. Another example of big government trying to control our lives and of course making life difficult for the poor.

Last week, the House of Representatives approved legislation to empower the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the tobacco industry -- and impose yet another tax on the American people.
The legislation would give the FDA broad authority to regulate tobacco products and to treat tobacco manufacturers similar to drug manufacturers. If approved by the Senate in September, this legislation would represent a big victory for anti-smoking zealots.
This legislation is being pushed by arch-liberal Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), but it has the bipartisan support of 326 House members who voted to pass the bill and at least 56 Senators who have cosponsored it, including John McCain and Barack Obama.
The House debate was highlighted by Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) yelling at House Republican Whip John Boehner (Ohio), a Camel smoker, that “(t)his legislation is on the floor because people are killing themselves smoking these evil cigarettes. And the distinguished gentleman, the minority leader, is going to be among the next to die.”
So tobacco companies would be taxed $5 billion to fund the work of FDA bureaucrats. Higher prices would hit the poor disproportionately, because smoking is more prevalent among low- income adults. Tobacco prohibitionists are one step closer to criminalizing the possession of a good cigar or a flavored can of dip.

All of a sudden now we care about the poor because they won't be able to afford cigarettes, meanwhile its OK for oil companies to triple gas prices and cause food prices to increase, raise subway fares and healthcare and cut funding on education. Give me a break.
Fuck the tobacco companies I hope they get taxed and regulated hardcore. We don't need poor people clogging up our hospitals because of cigarette-causing diseases and then we have to pay for it with our tax dollars. They are nothing but poison just like trans fats. People will lose their freedom to smoke and chew tobacco? That should be the least of our problems in this whored out country.
i recently quit smoking cigarettes so yah i wish they could be banned. on the spin tho, when it gets so expensive pple will start committing crimes to obtain it, where it can be classified more dangerous as marijuana. bc the diff in their danger is the following: what will the person do to obtain nicotine versus marijuana... nicotine fits are fucking ugly!

I know ur status says dumb it down, but u seem pretty smart. Your going to tell me this doesn't worry you? Its about freedom man and not being run by a fascict state.
I don't live in Russia under Putin now do I, I don't need the govt telling to wear my seatbelt what I can listen to on the radio, what products I can use on the mound... Its a slippery slope just cuz they aren't taking away something you like today doesn't tomorrow they won't.

I agree. Nobody gives a shit about this hitting the poor harder, do they care about how rising fuel costs and food costs have hit the poor harder? no. nobody gives a damn about what the poor can or can't afford b/c they assume they're poor because they're lazy and/or stupid.
secondly, i believe you should be able to do smoke wtf you want, but be prepared to pay. we are all sicker and our economy suffers when people are ill due to smoking or any other behavior that is known to cause cancer. if you want to purchase luxury items that are toxic to your health, it should be your choice to do so, but it's not your right for it to be affordable. i'm all for legalizing certain things, but not for making them cheap. people should be able to decide for themselves if they want to smoke, eat shitty food, or drink themselves into liver failure- but like i said, it doesn't have to be cheap.
if you use tax incentives to get corporations to innovate and invest, why not use taxes to deter people from smoking? you don't have to ban something, just make it pricey, and let the people who want to enjoy it, pay more.

so this would be a case where it's acceptable to "whine about your rights"? but when the gov'ts breathing down your neck telling you it's for your safety and the safety of the country, you better stfu about your rights and take it?
