Starting Point
In 1985, Ted Haggard starts New Life Church. It grows to 14,000, and in 2003, he's made head of the National Association of Evangelicals. He is also an adviser to President Bush.

Fever Pitch
In November 2006, prostitute Mike Jones alleges that Haggard has paid him for monthly meth-fueled sex. Haggard, who is married with five kids, admits to "sexually immoral conduct." He's fired from his own church, resigns from NAE and enters a "restoration" program.

The End Result
Haggard is deemed "completely heterosexual" by a church official and moves to Phoenix in April 2007 to study for a master's and preach at a halfway house. He asks for donations to help support his family to be sent through a charity later found to be run by a convicted sex offender. A New Life Church official tells NEWSWEEK Haggard returned to Colorado in June, with plans to sell life insurance. Haggard didn't return calls, but his voice mail says he's working for a company called Mortgage Protection Group.

haggard. wright is an idiot, but he didn't break any laws. this dude was screwing men on the side on meth binges, while his wife and 5 kids are home, & he's exposing his wife to god knows what disease.

not to mention being a fraud to his parish. as much as i disagree w/ wright's views, he said them, openly at the pulpit. this guy was a complete sham. preaching to evangelicals while he's doing tina banging men.:disgusted, then working w/ a sex offender AFTER he's supposedly "rehabilitated"? unreal.

yes mcgreevey was disgusting also. but my point about wright is, yes, his ideas can be terrible, but he SPOKE his mind openly, freely, and did not hide them.

haggard was a complete fraud. he preached purity, christianity, the bible- that homosexuality is an abomination, your body is a temple bla bla, then he goes out, cheats on his wife w/ a male hooker, and goes on drug binges w/ 5 kids at home. back to the pulpit to preach on sunday disclosing NOTHING about what he really is and really does.

i never said preaching hate was "ok" in fact I referred to it as retarded many times, but my problem with haggard was that he was covert about it and he practiced something very different than he preached. wright got up and spoke that nonsense openly, he did not.

and there is a difference between mcgreevy preaching family values as a person, and the leader of all evangelicals ACTUALLY PREACHING it as a pastor. one is literal, the other is not. he was the designated leader of a huge churchgoing population, his responsibility to them is much greater than just somebody claiming to support family values. he put himself in the position to be a role model and spiritual guide, and he was exactly the opposite.

none of it is ok, but when somebody has the balls to get on the altar and rail against gays, while they engage in gay sex, drugs, infidelity, lies, etc on the sly, it's just so stark. if you're going to live that way, don't hide behind the church.

i didn't say they're not human, but they are putting themselves to a higher standard than a layperson b/c they are choosing to LEAD spiritual congregations.

certain jobs hold higher standards like cops, politicians, pastors, etc. you most certainly are held to a different set of rules. you can't lead a congregation and live your life that way, you can't enforce the law and go around flagrantly breaking it, you can't claim to make laws and uphold the constitution while openly violating them.

it's like, would you allow a sitting judge to openly break laws? no. so how could you expect to have the leader of a church living a totally immoral life? you are 100% held to a higher standard when you assume these positions. yes they're human, but they are aware of the expectations their job involves and if they are unwilling to fulfill them they shouldn't be in them. bottom line.
