a little like cabbage but alot sronger and are very bitter so they must be cooked for a long period of time to cut that bitter taste....a great preparation is to cook them with apples, bacon, honey and little sherry vinegar - very good....we actually use them right now in a ceci soup, aka chickpea soup...it serves as a garnish along with hot and sweet italian sausage

when you say cooked--do you mean sauteed, or do they have to be boiled first?

you can do either or but if you are to just saute them i would break down the sprout like leaves....if you want to boil them just cut them in half boil the shit out of them then cooked them in the pan with the rest of the ingredients so they absorb whatever flavor you are trying to give them

or do what joey dollar did but adding water at a time that will work too

Here's a really nice brussel sprout recipe I made last year for thanksgiving - it's good to make anytime though ;)

brussels sprout hash with caramelized shallots

Ingredients:

6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, divided
1/2 pound shallots, thinly sliced
Coarse kosher salt
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
4 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 pounds brussels sprouts, trimmed
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup water

Melt 3 tablespoons butter in medium skillet over medium heat. Add shallots; sprinkle with coarse kosher salt and pepper. Sauté until soft and golden, about 10 minutes. Add vinegar and sugar. Stir until brown and glazed, about 3 minutes.

Halve brussels sprouts lengthwise. Cut lengthwise into thin (1/8-inch) slices. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sprouts; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Sauté until brown at edges, 6 minutes. Add 1 cup water and 3 tablespoons butter. Sauté until most of water evaporates and sprouts are tender but still bright green, 3 minutes. Add shallots; season with salt and pepper.

i :heart brussel sprouts! i boil them a bit just to soften them up and then bake them with olive oil garlic pepper & salt. SO GOOD! they can be a great snack too, it's like eating popcorn. they are so yum.

i once had to take a break from them bc there was a week or so that i was eating them everyday straight

If anyone works in Midtown, there's a place called City 75 on 50th in between 5th and 6th, right off Rock near the banks.

They have a buffet there (by the pound) and have THEEEEEEEEE most amazing brussel sprouts there. I kid you not, check them out if you're close. :spitfall

I love brussel sprouts too. I just saw them at the farmer's market by my work, but they were on GIANT stalks (I have never seen them like that before lol). I bet they taste so good but I decided to pass because I wouldn't have a bag big enough to fully cover them and there was no way I would want to take them home on nasty public transportation like that
