Governor Says Texans May Want to Secede From Union But Probably Won't

Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired up an anti-tax "tea party" Wednesday with his stance against the federal government and for states' rights as some in his U.S. flag-waving audience shouted, "Secede!"

An animated Perry told the crowd at Austin City Hall -- one of three tea parties he was attending across the state -- that officials in Washington have abandoned the country's founding principles of limited government. He said the federal government is strangling Americans with taxation, spending and debt.

Perry repeated his running theme that Texas' economy is in relatively good shape compared with other states and with the "federal budget mess." Many in the crowd held signs deriding President Barack Obama and the $786 billion federal economic stimulus package.

Later, answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

Perry is running for re-election against U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a fellow Republican. His anti-Washington remarks have become more strident the past few weeks as that 2010 race gets going and since Perry rejected $550 million in federal economic stimulus money slated to help Texas' unemployment trust fund.

Perry said the stimulus money would come with strings attached that would leave Texas paying the bill once the federal money ran out.

He said he believes he could be at the center of a national movement that is coordinated and focused in its opposition to the actions of the federal government.

"It's a very organic thing," he said. "It is a very powerful moment, I think, in American history."

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, also Republicans, have been outspoken against the federal economic stimulus spending and were supportive of tea parties in their states.

The protests, organized throughout the country by conservative groups and talk show hosts, were held on the federal income tax deadline day to imitate the original Boston Tea Party of American revolutionary times.

FOX News' Glenn Beck broadcast live in San Antonio from outside the Alamo, a legendary symbol of Texas independence. Park police estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people packed into the small plaza, many waving signs or carrying little yellow flags that read, "Don't tread on me." A local barbecue chain gave away free cups of iced tea.

Rocker Ted Nugent performed a shredder guitar version of the national anthem, but unlike some rallies elsewhere, San Antonio organizers forbade politicians from speaking.

"They are welcome to come and listen to us, for a change," they said in their statement.

Mike Smart, a 51-year-old oil field worker from West Texas, held up a white handwritten sign that said, "I'll keep my freedom, my $ and my guns. You keep the change."

"I just want the government to stay out of my way. I won't get in their way if they don't get in mine," said Smart, who described himself as conservative but not a Republican.

Government spending, going back multiple administrations, has reached a boiling point with the latest rounds of stimulus spending, he said. While the Bush administration spent heavily before he left office, the Obama administration has fast-tracked big spending, he said.

"Ol' George was going to the same destination. He just didn't want to tell anyone," said Smart.

Another protester, 38-year-old Melva Fried, said the forced ouster of General Motors Corp. CEO Rick Wagoner was the last straw for her -- a symbol the federal government was moving toward socialism.

"When a president can fire the head of a company, that's too much," she said, holding a sign that read "Stop Rewarding Failure."

The sales associate, who considers herself a disaffected Republican, said she doesn't believe the government should bail anyone out, including banks and individual homeowners.

The crowd at the Austin tea party appeared decidedly anti-Democrat. Many of the speakers were Republicans and Libertarians.

One placard said, "Stop Obama's Socialism." Another read, "Some Pirates Are in America," and it showed photographs of Obama, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wearing pirate hats.

Rebecca Knowlton, 45, of Smithville, said she took the day off of home-schooling her three children and brought them to the rally to teach them about civic duty. She felt camaraderie at the demonstration.

"The movement is growing stronger," she said. "You're not alone."

I'd love to see the rest of the U.S. break off from the east coast alone and live to see another 50 years. The image of government being nothing but theives who take your money and hand it to lazy people is getting to peoples heads. The rich and poor benefit from the stability afforded to them, and there's a reason these people are able to "take a day off from home schooling their kids" to protest all day.. it's because no matter what happens in this economy or in their own finances things always can turn around. There will always be a market for whatever they feel like making, selling, or talking about, and as much as it's easy to hate the fed sometimes, it's the only reason a country this big is filled with people who can dream as big as they want to and not worry so much about the future of the ground they walk on. It's easy to get angry at whatever company or individual this week is benefitting from govt involvement and spending, but every single person and company in this country has benefitted from that stability and their biggest worry being "how long will this recession last?"

Hey Texas!

If you ever plan on seceding from the Union, Chuck Norris has got your back!

He'll be your commander-in-chief, y'all!

The actor and avid Mike Huckabee supporter ranted in an online column on Monday and published his desires to become Texas' first president!

Can we say delusional?

Says Norris: "I may run for president of Texas. That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state."

The martial arts master believes "thousands of cell groups will be united around the country in solidarity over the concerns for our nation" with Texas leading the fight!

"Anyone who has been around Texas for any length of time knows exactly what we'd do if the going got rough in America," Chuck stated.

Ha!

Spare us of your uber-republican mumbo jumbo, please!

So what would kill them? Other than federal soldiers? It certainly wouldn't be their economy, as the South and Midwest has all the agriculture and whatever manufacturing is left in this country. The east meanwhile, has make believe they trade around.

Just remember Texas was it's own state for 10+ years, and fought off an army many times it's size to win independence.

Also remember, no state entered the union thinking it had no right to secede if the far off government trampled on it's rights. Just ask Abe Lincoln in his 1848 speech:

Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable – a most sacred right – a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world.

Nor, is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize, and make their own, of so much of the territory as they inhabit.

The image of government being nothing but theives who take your money and hand it to lazy people is getting to peoples heads. The rich and poor benefit from the stability afforded to them, and there's a reason these people are able to "take a day off from home schooling their kids" to protest all day..

It's not an image of government, it actually is happening, and no one ever wants to ask whether or not taxation is morally correct, not like it would matter to the secularists state worshippers in Washington. Another problem isn't only giving it to the "lazy" -who I reckon wouldn't be lazy at all if it weren't for the "safety nets" that reduce the opportunity cost of not working, - but their rich friends in Goldman Sachs.

Stability is a good thing? Well that sounds an awful lot like Mussolini's fascist argument. Hey he taxed us to death, but the trains ran on time.

it's because no matter what happens in this economy or in their own finances things always can turn around. There will always be a market for whatever they feel like making, selling, or talking about,
Ain't no market out there right now, ain't gonna be a market for a long time. Not if the government keep bailing their friends out. It's always interesting to see who gets the money, yesterday it was reported that 6 companies will get 75 billion to give new mortgages. Why 6 companies, who chose them? Why give people free mortgages? What lunatic thinks 75 billion can help an economy that lost 50 trillion?

and as much as it's easy to hate the fed sometimes, it's the only reason a country this big is filled with people who can dream as big as they want to and not worry so much about the future of the ground they walk on.

Easy to hate the fed? Of course it is, it should be.

Honestly, JK you're a bigger man than I am. If you love fellow man so much, that you won't show animosity towards the people who are making your dollars worth less and less everyday.

It's easy to get angry at whatever company or individual this week is benefitting from govt involvement and spending, but every single person and company in this country has benefitted from that stability and their biggest worry being "how long will this recession last?"

If by stability you mean booms and busts, 16 year depressions, 15 year booms, 8 year stagflations all made possible by the fed then yeah I guess that's beneficial.

How long will the recession last is one of many reasons, not least of which is being labeled as suspected terrorists, at the same time they are looking to take our guns, and our money.

If any State in the Union will declare that it prefers separation" over "union," "I have no hesitation in saying, 'let us separate.

tell us why tax and spend is healthier for our country than supply side or true capitalism ??? Obama outdone keynes ..keynes only promoted deficits as long as there was not a current deficit/recession in place

now i praised Bush cause he gave us the third largest tax cut in hostory ..i hated his spending .. when he gave the stimulus of 1200 you were riffing on him bigtime .. you allways blasted bush economics

tell me why Barrys plan is better than Reagan, jfk or Bush jr ... better yet tell me why Barrys plan is better than Clinton who did raise taxes ..but balanced the fed budget ??

do you honestly believe raisng taxes 4% on the top 5% can pay off 10 trillion .. he said by end of his first term the deficit will be cut in half

Bush couldnt accomplish that with his 6 years of high gdp and consumerism in tax revenue .. barry gonna have to bank on 14% GDP .. are you insane ???

"Now, none of us know exactly what's going to happen six or eight or 10 years from now," Obama said. "Here's what I do know: If we don't tackle energy, if we don't improve our education system, if we don't drive down the costs of health care, if we're not making serious investments in science and technology and our infrastructure, then we won't grow 2.6 percent, we won't grow 2.2 percent. We won't grow."

"In summary, Obama is correct when he says the CBO predicts that under Obama's budget plan, the deficit would be cut in half in five year."

The same guy that predicted John Kerry would win in 2004 and the dollar would collapse in 2008. He also says that after Obama's first term we will be the first underdeveloped country. Right, so all of this infrastructure the Federal government is putting money toward is going to make us underdeveloped?

Oh yeah and dont forget about the food riots hes predicting as well. This guy loves the fear agenda.
