Anybody else here have experience with this? My doctor's diagnosed me with it and apparently I have to go on medication for life to replace hormone my body isn't producing :(

What's odd is people who have it are usually overweight, I'm not, and the medication I'm going to take is supposed to make your metabolism speed up (which really makes me nervous). It can also cause sleeplessness. :disappoin

My mother has it. I forget the difference between hypo and hyper, she had the one that keeps you skinny, then after she had me it started acting up and her weight started to change.

I eat a lot actually, but I'm prone to strange weight fluctuations w/ little to no change in my diet/exercise. I can put on 10 lbs, lose 10 lbs, and have done absolutely nothing different. A couple of months ago I was 130, now i'm 115 lbs and 5'8. I haven't changed a thing about what i'm eating or doing, my body just goes wacky by about 10-15 lbs. at least now this might explain some of it.

I've had strange symptoms over the years like fainting, or fatigue, etc. and i had bloodwork done but nobody ever detected this. I recently went to a new primary doctor for a physical and he told me my levels were off. He did another blood test to be sure, and here we are.

now that i read about it, i did have a lot of symptoms i just didn't realize they were connected to anything. i thought i was just :yourcrazy lol

i dont think a complete thyroid panel is included in routine bloodtests which is crazy, but im pretty sure thats why ppl arent usually diagnosed right away.

seriously, i've always been quick to go to the dr. and it goes to show you that doesn't always result in knowing wtf is going on w/ your body. i shoulda changed doctors long ago.

No, that's allopecia, which is an autoimmune condition. Similarly, the thyroid malfunction is a condition of the autoimmune system. It's said to be that most thyroid conditions are precursors to other conditions.

You may want to run this by your doctor but selenium and iodine play an active role in thyroid malfunction. Often times we don't get enough selenium in our daily diet therefore the thyroid isn't able to obtain the necessary components to its healthy functioning. In short, selenium converts T4 to T3 which helps thryoid regularity. I would look into a supplement called selenocysteine. If your doctor okays it, I would take it. In addition, I would eat a few Brazilian nuts each day and try to up your shellfish intake slights (for purposed of iodine which you probably lack if your selenium is low...which I'm assuming is, considering the hypothyroidism/hashimoto).
Best of luck!

it's not. ii had it done, along with liver panel , for years bc i was on medication back then that made my drs go the extra mile.
ive recovered from my prevous ailments but i still request my thyroid levels be checked along with others.

yo-yo weight change is bad for ur organs as is. strains the liver, kidneys, etc bc of the obvious reason for lack of stability. if anything ull feel better when u begin treatment.
a friend of mine take thyroxine and she said it basically makes her break a sweat more easily but her energy levels are better. her muscles build better too.. se would become flacid too easily. (she had hyper but they killed off her thyroid so she balances it with the medication) she does become restless but shes a shady bitch who does coke here and there, and doesnt take her meds consistently.(thats how she knows how her body is diff with and without the meds. she actually bounces back and forth like a fukin moron) in fact i dont talk to her anymore bc of her shady drug habits. drinks a lot of alcohol, smokes a pack of newports a day, and at least 5 servings combined btwn coffee and redbull a day. often more. thing is she can be ok with 1 or 2 bc the thyroxine counteracts her lethargy.
she was told to get a blood pressure machine and check herself every moring nd night just in case her heart acts funny so she can tackle the issue immediately. obviously she doesnt do it... but if u play with half a deck ur way ahead of the game. i woudnt be worried. if anything ull feel better and ur body will not be fighting with itself...

oh i have excellent blood pressure and i had an echocardiogram recently & everything was 100% fine so I'm not worried about the heart thank god. i don't smoke, rarely drink, and hate redbull lol

i'm gonna ask him some more questions before i fill this prescription, but when i take medicine i take it consistently. no point in bothering if you're not going to be diligent.

You're lucky they were able to detect it. Hypothyroidism can take years to detect...it took one of my cousins 10 years to get diagnosed.

it's really not a big deal... i've had it since i was an infant bc i had to have a piece of my thyroid removed. you'll probably get your blood tested every 4-6 months for the first two years until your levels stabilize. From then on, you get blood tests 1x/yr.

myth about hypothyroidism is that it makes you overweight. the truth is, if you're on the right level of medication and your levels are stabilized, you're fine. it might be more of an effort to lose weight, if you have excess weight to lose, depending on the person.

couple of years ago i was always anxious and my hair was falling out more than the usual, turns out my levels were off. first time in my life that happened though. I have a great endocrinologist at Mt. Sinai UES if you're interested...

I thought that was true about the hair thing. that happened to me last year i started buggin out thinking i had this , but i went to a dermatologist and he tested for this and my levels were fine. maybe i should go again since apparently this is hard to diagnose.

my dr. did tell me ONE of the possible symptoms was hair loss, but not every single person that has hypothyroidism experiences every single symptom that could be/is associated with it.

nothing's happened to my hair lol
