Anyway of avoiding this? I have been getting this for awhile. I read that its due to your body not having enough carbs (or you basically are burning them off) and its burning protein as its energy source. I have a bowl of oatmeal and usually a PB (natural) and Jelly sandwich on WW bread (or a WW Bagel/Roll) before I leave work and hit the gym (I am working out about 30 minutes later). And I drink a Protein shake during my workouts as well.

I dont think I am going catabolic because I am eating enough through-out the day and before I train but I dont get why I am getting that smell.

it's from your sweat due to the by-products of proteins breakdown being excreted through the sweat glands.

is the oatmeal and PB&J sandwich your only carb intake for the day?

it sounds like you're body is in ketosis. this happened to me when i did the BODY OPUS diet by Dan Duchane... i smelled horrible and felt like shit! lol but i was doing that for a bodybuilding show.

Nah, I eat food that has carbs throughout the day. Chicken, rice, shakes, fruit/veggies ect. I am not eating a bowl of pasta or anything like that. But I keep my diet on the high side of protein and low/moderate side with carbs.

I feel great when I am working out its afterwards that I feel like crap. I am just going to ease back on the cardio I think and see what happens.

mike you're probably eating less carbs than you think. meat has no carbs, most vegetables are low in carbs, and i'm sure the protein shakes you drink have low or no carbs. what kind of jelly and how much are you putting on that whole wheat sandwich? peanut butter, whole wheat bread, oatmeal- these are foods that have fiber and not much sugar. the fat from the PB combined with that fiber make it slower to digest. try eating a piece of fruit with your pre-workout snack and see if that makes the ammonia smell dissapear. also remember that while you are working out, you're not really digesting your food like you would be if you were at rest. so all that food in your belly is probably not supplying your body with energy until after your workout is over.

Well, I usually eat about 20-30 minutes before I leave work and then it takes another 20-30 minutes before I start to workout so I think an HR window is enough time for the food to digest enough. Plus the shake I have (only kind I drink) is Whey which gets absorbed very quickly and I drink it during my workout.

I probably dont eat a lot of carbs through out the day, and I just use regular Jelly but I dont put a lot on there, just enough to cover the bread, I am not a huge fan of Jelly but the PB by itself on the WW bread is too dry.

I actually had a bowl of oatmeal and then about 30 minutes later (on my way to the gym) I ate a WW Bagel. I felt like complete crap and got drained really quick.

not really mike, an hour isn't enough to digest food. during that hour before your work out begins, your stomach is still breaking down that food in your stomach mechanically and chemically, but it's not being digested and absorbed yet until it enters the small intestine about 2 to 4 hours later. liquids are digested and absorbed faster than solid food, so if you really want to avoid that ammonia smell and shitty feeling after your workout, drink juice or gatorade before.

just curious but how many carbs and/or grams of sugar are in your whey protein shake? and what is the main type of whey protein in it (hydrolysate, isolate, etc.)

i love carbs, btw. unlike my old bodybuilding/figure competition diet, nowadays i eat lots of carbs- both simple and complex, and try to eat as low fat as possible. low carb dieting fucked my body up enough, especially in the off season when i'd eat every goddamn thing in sight (after starving myself of carbs for months and months). also, i found that i can get really really lean by eating low fat, high carb, moderate protein with some good, lengthly cardio 3 times a week. and because i'm not starving my body of carbs, i don't crave junk food. it's easier, healthier and more natural to follow a low fat diet than a low carb diet, imo.

Well Gatorade is out of the question. I tried it on and off (the G2) and it doesnt really help all that much.

As for my shake it has Per Scoop: 0 Grams of Sugar, 2 Grams of Carbs, and 2 Grams of Fat (less then 1% saturated) and 24 Grams of Protein. Its Isolate Whey Protein and it doesnt have any Sucrose, Maltodextrin or Aspartame. Its Dymatize Elite Whey Protein.

Maybe what I will do is eat at 5pm and leave the office after 6 and give it an extra 30-45 minutes to digest and see how that goes.

I dont really crave sweets or anything like that and I do eat what I want I just keep it clean. I just stick to eating a high protein diet and doing two 10 minute cardio sessions 3 to 4 times a week.

ive had the same problem..after dieting for a few months coming off it I cant stop eating and its all bad...getting back on the wagon and eating clean has been tough this week, but its come to a point where the bad food has started to make me feel off and is going to hinder training so its has to be done.

ive found that cutting our starches and such and replacing it with higher fat is good fuel for me.
