I took a spill during BJJ tonight shit is all swollen up and purple and I'm just wondering how long before I can get back into it, or if I'm fucked for a period of time?

if its broken it will take a while to heal just like any bone fractures. they dont really do anything for broken toes, unless its really serious. your best bet is to get something solid between your broken toe and a healthy one and tie a broken toe to it to make sure it heals properly. you may even have to rock one of those orthopedic shoes for a while. take motrin for pain. good luck.

Yep.. And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.. Other than tape your toes together... Took my toe like two months before it was normal looking again..

you think I'll be able to work out on it? I can walk but I guess running is probably a no go? If I tape it up, grappling?

I think out of all my injuries on the mat, broken toe was the most prohibiting. Everyone near the ring heard it snap. It was just the pinky toe and this is what it turned into. At least I got to work on nothing but my boxing for 2 weeks.

You'll probably need close to a week off. Work on keeping the swelling down so it can begin the healing process. The only grappling I was able to do was working with someone in my guard. I couldn't do any grappling off my feet for about 2 weeks. It hurt for well over a month though.

i would seriously give it some rest. there is no need to risk making it much worse unless you are training to compete

my co-worker broke his pinky a while ago...but that's because he's just a fat, slovenly sloppy young man who has poor coordination because he's idle all the time....he showed me a photo of the toe, and it looks all purple...he hasn't been to the hospital for it or anything...he said the swelling went down and he's going to leave it the way it is....

listen to lil bouncer.
tape that shit up and get going. you can chop your pinky toe off you don't need em. in 1,000,000 years we won't have pinky toes anyhow they will go away from evolution. we rarely use them, if it was a big toe i would say you may have a problem.
if you are doing any muay thai obvously don't throw kicks and knees, but for BJJ i would say rest a few days for the swelling but get back asap. all part of the job. ;-)

I would have to respectfully disagree. Although I agree that manning up and doing work is the best option for many, for some it's best to take some time to let it heal. If it was a matter of cutting the toe off and moving on that would be a great option, but unfortunately, that shit hurts. There is shit to work on, no need to stay on the couch and be lazy but to stick to your normal routine is a little unreasonable. Unless you count on this to pay your bills like lil bouncer, probably better off getting better first.

I broke my big toe when I was 14 - I was on a trampoline in someone backyard and did not realize I was that close to the edge and backflipped over. Fucking killed. It took about 4 months to heal and I can still crack it whenever I want.

I basically crushed the front half on one toe in the middle of football season in college... Taping it to the other toe just made it hurt worse.. I never rested it, hurt like fuck and is ugly as sin cuz it healed all wrong.. but fuck it, feet are meant to be ugly.. I say tough it out, it'll be pain free in 2 months.. Ice it a few times a day to keep swelling down

i might've lol.. but i def broke my tailbone once and my rib another time ...OUCH!
but i had to sit on a donut for a month w/ the tailbone thing :lol
just make sure u tape it up , make sure it heals straight. it can heal and end up looking crooked!
I stubbed my toe so hard once I broke it!
just had it caught between the chains of a bicycle...
I imagine healing time varies for each person...
some heal faster than others

i see alot of guys who break toes, and they tape it up and keep going.
and these guys i guess if you consider it maybe they pay bills (cops, law enforcement etc) honestly i broke a finger so bad i walked around with internal bleeding for 5 days that i had to goto the hospital and get it drained by burning thru the finger nail. Pain is pain.
I said to let the swelling go down at least, but i mean if a toe takes 4 months to heal you and you are conscious of it, you can always buy training shoes, i see guys in the school wear em too, as long as you not walking in off the street with them.
if you goto the hospital they aren't even going to splint it. they are going to say why did you come while the guy with the rebar sticking out of his eye is singing ? lol.

I've broken the same big toe three times. The first was from a soccer injury and I continued to run and play during the healing process---def fucked my toe up which is why it was so easy to break the other two times and now it won't bend as far as the other. Tape it up, continue on with your every day life, but I recommend not running for a few weeks.
