whenever i get per diem the amount depends on how far from home i am and i either get cash or a check without any tax taken out. you're supposed to get that amount before you leave town for work. i'm not really sure what you're asking though about a set amount.

I always get a check before I travel for the estimated amount of time. Im under the impression/heard the goverment has a chart for per diem. It varys from state to state and in different countries. If I get $50 a day per diem and the goverments per diem rate is $110 a day per said area,,,, I can claim the difference on my taxes.,, hope I explained it ok.

here is the website for per diem in the states .... http://www.gsa.gov/Portal/gsa/ep/contentView.do?contentType=GSA_BASIC&contentId=17943 i am not sure you can claim the difference i have friends who get to claim actuals i.e they have to show receipts. i travel 60% of the year but my company pays me per diem whether i use it or not. it is a tax free item but i know when i didn't get full per diem i was not able to claim the difference on taxes but i haven't checked in awhile if you could now.

if you are not getting reimbursed, then just deduct the actual expenses you incur, it's often a lot easier that way
