Carbs 20 min after is actually not optimal. You should drink a Post workout shake immediatley after your workout for optimal results consisting of dextrose or malodextrin and whey protein because of fast absorption and breakdown

After you finish your workout you should try to consume high glycemic carbohydrates immediately. This replenishes energy and prevents further breakdown of muscle. You should also consume at least 40g of protein within a half hour of leaving the gym.
I just got home from the gym and I immediately had a serving of Creatine, a serving of Glutamine all washed down with a glass of grape juice followed by 200mg of Alpha Lipoic acid.
I also just polished off a Myoplex RTD shake with 43g of protein.
In about an hour Ill be eating some nice chicken for dinner.:eat

what are some practical examples of all the things that have been listen in the replies???
for instance..when I leave the gym..I usually get a baguette ( a hearty crusty french bread) from balthazar (I work out at the soho NYSC) cuz its right on my way home. I love bread and im always so hungry so thats usually what i eat within 5 minutes of leaving the gym. is that bad or good?

DUUUUUDE...bread is NOT the afterworkout meal you want.
Your body needs protein right after a workout. My gym has a shake bar, so sometimes Ill have them mix up a Myoplex for me or Ill bring an RTD or throw some protein powder in a shaker bottle and mix it with some water at the gym.
If you go with the powder in the shaker, defintiely throw some Glutamine in as well.
Optimally I like to have the shake as I leave the gym and then have a real meal about 30-60 minutes later.

Is powder protein the way to go ?? are there better sources of protein, or is this the easiest way to go?

Most people feel that whey protein is the best because it works the fastest. Meat has the best protein so only try to resort to shakes when necessary.

A powdered whey protein is the way to go right after a workout. I have been using the Ready To Drink shakes alot, but Im sure they arent as good as the powder because they are processed.
Your diet should consist of at least 3 solid meals a day. Use your shakes or bars as your in between meals. Real food is always better, but its really not practical to pull a steak out of your gym locker right after a sick workout:chuckle

high glycemic carbs, L-glutamine and protein are your post workout best friends - (100% cranberry juice and grape juice are perfect) and glutamine - i personally mix glutamine powder into the juice
and you have an hour and a half "window of opportunity" post workout to eat lots of protein, so i would get behind a protein shake asap then a half hour or so later some solid protein like grilled chicken

:lifting :pushup Wow i do the exact same thing....im starting mag 10 (instead of creatine)next week ....supposedly puts creatine to shame the only prob is its expensive $70 for 2 week supply
not that it's much input.. but u should follow what Fierce1 and joey said. u need the carbs in the immediate short term followed by a good source of protein.
just be sure to eat up whatever u do or protein synthesis will go right after ur muscle stores... not good.

Just try to take in anything high glycemic to replenish glycogen levels. Any type of sugar should be good.

its both + glutamine!
high sugar to replenish spent stores and to spike insulin levels to boost protein synthesis and absorption =)
just wash down some L-Glutamine and clean quality protein with some high sugar 100% natural juice and you're good to go

As Fierce1 says, you need both. You should raise glycogen levels with sugar as soon as possible, but you should also consume protein as soon as possible to prevent your muscles from starving. Not consuming either within a half hour or so can be counterproductive to your training.
