Anyone take or do kickboxing? I am curious how hard it is to learn and how well the workout is?
My friend is a kickboxer (fights professionally) and has me interested in taking it... mostly so I use it to supplement my cardio as well as use it if I ever need it.

I took Muay Thai back in the day. It really depends on what you're looking to gain from it. If you want more cardio, go with American, if you want to beat the piss out of someone, take Muay Thai.
Muay Thai was a pain because it mostly consists of conditioning, which can be rather painful. You have to willingly take hits, even in the face and there were times I had to kick a 300lb sandbag until I couldn't walk and blood was dripping from my shins. If you're in it for the cardio, stick to American.
All kickboxing is a good workout and it's not that hard to learn. Once you develop basic form you progress from there. It's pretty straight-foward and doesn't have a lot of bullshit stances a moves as do a lot of the chinese martial arts.

american kickboxing sucks! the rules are wak
u have to throw between 8-13 round kicks a round (NOT LOW KICKS) whereas in muay tai there is no set standard
however muay tai is more using elbows and knees, alot of low kicks tends to be less punching
the art i study is more geared toward muay tai with much more punching, if ur gonna take kickboxng stay away from american kickboxing it blows, and dont bother these cardio classes they are shit too... they dont teach proper technique they just are geared toward the workout... if thats what u want buy tai bo or some exercise video
any fighting is a great interval workout and youll get a great workout doing pretty much any fighting but if ur interesting in learning to fight dont take american kickboxing

Agreed. I always felt that American sucked. It's funny to see the American kickboxers get their asses kicked by the Muay Thai boxers lol; they stand no chance.

When I took Muay Thai like 6 years ago, it was $50/month for some and $100 for others. Like with any martial art, you also have to spend a lot on equipment.

Yea I miss taking martial arts I used to go to Tiger Schaulman's but it started becoming gay.
I do miss sparring though wow that was a workout in itself. It's like the 'hands on' part of the class where you actually use your techniques on an opponent.
Kickboxing is a great martial art especially for a beginner because the techniques are simple yet effective. Roundhouse kicks are the easiest kicks to throw (also the most effective) and involves alot of swinging action which is simple.

THE ROUND KICKS ARE DEF NOT THE EASIET TO THROW SNAP FRONT KICK IS
TO THROW A ROUND KICK RIGHT U HAVE TO TURN UR HIPS, UR OPPOSITE HEAL, STAY LOW, KICK WITH UR SHINE AND INSTEP NOT UR FOOT, AND KEEP UR HANDS UP
FRONT SNAP KICK IS JUST LIFTING UR FRONT LEG SNAP OUT AND BACK AND PUT IT DOWN
HARDEST KICK MY FAR IS A JUMP SPINNING HOOK KICK!

Osuuu! Wooood are you an instructor there? I used to go a while back (more like a year and a half ago lol). You are right the front snap kick is easy but I think that the kickboxing roundhouse is a bit simpler than a karate roundhouse (more precision and technique). You also gotta be careful where you kick. You don't wanna kick someone in a hard area that hurts!!!
Jump spinning hook kick? thats a sick move but you gotta be quick with it and have good aim. I attempted doing that one time outside someone's house party drunk. I landed flat on my back lol.
Spinning back kicks are good too very powerful if you do it right.
