The Army still makes homophobic decisions to their possible detriment: U.S. Army dismisses more gay linguists (http://www.planetout.com/pno/news/article.html?2003/04/16/1).

I think that banning gays and lesbians is fucked up, but it depends on the situation. Being homophobic is dumb, but there is a difference between being homophobic and rationally avoiding certain gay people. Most gay people I know are extremely respectful to straight people and don't try to go there if you know what I mean. Others will do anything for a cheap look or feel. If someone is respectful, I don't see why it would be such a big deal. But, if someone is trying to convince the straight guys to let him give them blowjobs, this presents a problem. If they allow people to flirt with others (same sex or not), then they might as well just combine guys and girls instead of seperating them.

Though I understand that some gay people are disrespectful in the terms described, I also know there are plenty of straight people who are just the same. I don't see how this has anything to do with gays in the military. If anything, gays have more to worry about in the military than a straight service member who may be the object of someone's secret crush.
The fact remains,
A few bad apples ruin the group. Its the way the world works. Not fair but just the way it has always been. Regardless if we ever have a black president or not, he will always be a "another siteanother siteanother siteanother siteanother siteanother site" because its the sterotype how a majority of people see black people. That was just an example so do jump down my throat please. There was probably a few gays that were the way as above desribed that ruined it for the entire group. Take in consideration, they have to do whats best for the U.S. Army. If straight people cant deal with it bad things can happen and they want to avoid this. But it also has to do with the dominating factor that most US Forces are stright also. Clearly its wrong but its just the way the world works.

You're arguing that boys in the military just can't control themselves. Why should they then be given guns?
Sorry, I doubt that a few gays who couldn't "control" themselves were the cause of this policy. And if you yourself can't control your fears and prejudices, then you should NOT be fighting for this country in other countries. Once upon a time your argument was used to keep minorities out of the military who just so happen to now make up most of it.
BTW, the black President comment was uncalled for, presumptuous, and shallow.

No it wasnt uncalled for because I see it every fucking day. A black person walks by either I hear it from someone around me or someone Im with "another siteanother siteanother siteanother siteanother siteanother site" because theyre black. Just because you can't handle the reality of the way the world works dont fucking call me shallow. Personally myself, Id feel real uncomfortable showering with a gay guy. Thats just me. And BTW, fears and predjudices have no effect whatsoever in fighting for our country. And whats with this once upon a time "your" arguement statement shit. The fucking balls you have to say "your", classifying myself as a racist biggot. Whos the shallow person now? I CLEARLY said its wrong so dont place me in a category where I shouldnt be. And of course by not wanting to shower with a gay guy is probably going to classify me as a gay basher too now right? I dont respect gay people any less than I do straight and i expect the same in return. And if straight people can't hold there anger towards the hate of gays, they should be dishonorably discharged. I never said at any point that I agreed with this, all I said was this is the way the world works. UN_FUCKING_FORTUNATELY

It's that military tough-guy attitude. The Sgt or whoever would probably get on your case and call you a pussy if you're short one push-up. Imagine how much of a pussy they'd think you are just because you are gay. I'm sure they are just ignorant and assign girly attributes to gays and don't want them around. Meanwhile I know gays that can fuck people up. Stereotypes are so over.

I think the reason they got discharged is far more important than them actually getting discharged, and this reason was obviously not touched upon in this article.
I can understand if these people made some kind of sexual advances or stared at people in the showers, in turn making others feel uncomfortable. Its the same as if straight men and women were showering together and either one of them made the other feel uncomfortable by staring or advancing sexually.
If these homosexuals are being disharged for purely the fact that they are gay, its wrong! But if its for a real reason, then its understandable.
Point is that sex does not belong in the military, gay or straight. If sex is getting in the way of the militaries job, then its something that should be an issue. I have a feeling that these gays are only being judged on thier sexual preferences, and not on thier actions.
On a side note, this is a healthy discussion and there is no need to attack anyone on this board for thier opinions or to use derogatory language.
I whole-heartedly agree,
I don't care if your black, white puerto rican or haitian...lol gay straight have one arm and one leg( although it be awfully hard, if you are willing to serve your country, you should be allowed.

I can actually speak on this from personal experience because while I was in boot camp, one of the cadets got a hard on in the shower and was immediately removed and discharged. There was alot of grey rumors floating around about the exact details, but that was the bottom line of the situation. There would be no assigning of bs duty, they don't even waste the time.
